TIME. SPACE. REPEAT. – Consequence – review
Time. Space. Repeat

This has been out a while now, so “Consequence” is, probably, no longer the latest album by Time. Space. Repeat.

I don’t know. That smacks of research whereas my internet purchases tend to involve 4am sleepless nights, blissed out on over the counter cough medication, whisky and blurry, bad memories.

Apparently, the kids call this post-rock. Good for them, with their hashtags and their Spacehoppers and their shrinking brains. Mind you, if this had come out on the seventies, people would probably have called it Krautrock. It’s OK, kids, we don’t call the Krauts Krauts anymore. You can come back in. Anyway, Time. Space. Repeat. is a fella in Southampton.

There is a surprisingly large amount of enjoyable guitar picking here. I like that. It’s largely instrumental, with nine of the eleven tracks, vocal-less. There are also plenty of synths, and more than enough swooshes to keep an old, curmudgeonly spacerocker, content.

Unusually, it’s backloaded. Normally, musicians stick the two best tunes up front, then hope you don’t notice as things gradually diminish. Not so, here. It starts well but the two best tracks are in the second half. That’s where you will find ‘First Time In A Long Time’ and the closing ‘The Other Place’. Splendid stuff. Yes, there are a couple of ambient moments where you start to look around for a new crochet pattern, or a discarded tea cake, but they’re few and far between.

Turns out this began life as a challenge to write and record and album in a month, which merely confirms my opinion that musicians are a lazy lot. Bang it out. It worked for the first four years of the 1970s when all the good records were made. According to the manufacturer, “Consequence gradually descends from the early optimism and utopian visions of the future into one blighted by humanity’s hubris-led downfall”. Which may explain my fondness for the second half, as mentioned earlier. Much to enjoy.

  1. Thank you kindly sir! I hope the package arrived in a timely manner.

You’re half right about it but being the most recent release. There’s no new album, but a six track EP that’s only a few months old. I’ll send you a copy of I can ever afford the physical media 😁
