The ongoing Mike Oldfield reissues programme is into the eighties now, and even though this is the 40th anniversary of “Tubular Bells”, here are a couple of his later albums in the shape of “Crises” and “Five Miles Out”. Now if you are a Mike Oldfield fan, you’re going to need to dig deep for these, are they are out in a multitude of formats, some of which are just lovely.

“Crises” came out in 1983, and it was actually the first Mike Oldfield album I ever heard,seeing as how I was still in the primary school at the time of “Tubular Bells”. Of course, it helped that the album was pushed along by the hit single ‘Moonlight Shadow’ featuring Maggie Reilly. But once you moved on to the album, it was the other special guests such as Jon Anderson and Roger Chapman that captured your attention. It’s one of the best collections of songs that Oldfield ever put out and remains one of my favourite of his albums. Deep breath time now, because here come from the formats;

It’s out on vinyl, in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies only available through mikeoldfieldofficial.com. The inner bag contains a new essay with an interview with Mike. And it’s probably sold out already. The single CD comes with B-sides, rarities, and two newly prepared acoustic reworkings by Oldfield of ‘Moonlight Shadow’ and ‘Shadow On The Wall.’ There is a double CD which has one disc as before, along with a second disc recorded at Wembley Arena in London on July 22nd 1983. Finally, there is a box set which includes two previously unreleased CDs of the entire Wembley concert, highlights of which are on the double CD, along with a DVD of the previously unreleased fifty-minute video film “Crises at Wembley” featuring full performances of ‘Crises’ and ‘Tubular Bells Part One’ and rare promotional videos. It comes packaged in an attractive box with a 32-page hard-backed book, with sleevenotes containing an interview with Oldfield. Phew.

The year before “Five Miles Out” was released. It was a transitional album between his longer instrumental pieces, exemplified here by ‘Taurus II’ and the more song based material, which included ‘Family Man’, sung here by Maggie Reilly, but probably best remembered thanks to the Hall & Oates cover a wee while later. If I had to pick one of these to buy I’d go for “Crises” first, but this still has a lot to recommend it. It’s also out on vinyl as well as the standard CD, which has the B-side ‘Waldberg (The Peak)’ and a demo of ‘Five Miles Out.’ The deluxe edition comes as a 2CD / 1DVD edition with live material, a promo video and two BBC performances from the Six Fifty Five Special from 1982.
