From Hieroglyphics to Emojis: Festival of Ancient Writing – Tuesday 11th November

We are delighted to announce a Festival in collaboration with the University of Oxford Department of Linguistics, “Read Between The Lines: From Hieroglyphs to Emojis” on Tuesday 11th November, 3 – 5.30pm at Cheney School.

Emojis, scare quotes, cartouches in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and many more elements of written texts exist between, around, or on top of the words themselves, and help us read between the lines. Explore Egyptian, Minoan, Cypriot and other ancient scripts and modern emojis through a range of exciting and informative activities, stalls and performances!

There will be three ten minute performances of a play exploring signs through time, followed by a discussion at 3.05pm, 4pm, and 5pm. All performances will be British Sign Language interpreted.

There will also be Minoan dancing, facepainting and refreshments!

The event is free and open to all ages. We welcome school groups as well as individuals and families. To book, please fill in this form. If you have any questions, please email lro@cheneyschool.org

Classical Author Discussion Series

We are starting a Classical Authors Discussion Series from September for people to come and explore the writing of a range of different authors in a friendly and informal discussion group. We will have two sessions on each author with a bit of reading in between.

The sessions will run every other Wednesday in term time from 10 to 11am at our classics centre at Cheney School, with drinks and biscuits! It is particularly aimed at those studying classics at sixth form, but we also welcome interested parents and other visitors.

Our first two sessions will explore Sappho! To book, please email lro@cheneyschool.org
