LOUISE CONNELL – Clients Of Suddenness – review
Late Night From Glasgow

The record may be From Glasgow but Ms Connell is fae Airdrie, fact fans.

It must be nigh on 10 years since I first heard Reverieme, as she was then. [checks the internet] Nearly. 2016 was when I reviewed ‘Venus’ by Reverieme. I liked it. And I’ve liked everything I’ve heard since, claiming it was “alt-folk, stripped back electronics and eighties sci-fi soundtracks”. And I was sober then.

So, here we are. Older and none the wiser. The first two bits are still appropriate. Less soundtracky, though. Fortunately, the plinky plonky* keyboards are still there. Otherwise, the sound has become fuller and richer, without straying into bombast. Mind you, when you’ve got the likes of former Fish drummer, Mark Brzezicki, playing the, um, drums, then that’s what you’d expect. And while I’m here, go and listen to ‘Old Crow’ from “Field Of Crows”. Not now. Later. *actual technical term.

Ms Connell has always had a fabulous voice. Nothing has changed there, as a quick spin of ‘My Agincourt’ or ‘Indentation Of Life’ will amply demonstrate. There are a couple of songs that miss for me, as they stray a bit too close to the dreaded world of ambient, but the majority of the album works really well. As befits someone who trained as a teacher, the lyrics are a delight. Clever without being pretentious. Something that people like me could learn from.

At the time of writing it’s at Number 3 in the Official Scottish Albums Chart. I’m no sure what that means but, hopefully, it means that more people are discovering her talent.

It’s out on several formats for your listening pleasure and, it will be a pleasure.
