OLIVIA BROADFIELD – The Split: Barcelona; Original Songs from the TV Series – review
Townsend Music

I vaguely remember The Split. I tried watching the first series, largely due to my long-standing crush on Nicola Walker, but my wife had only been dead a few months, and my ability to focus was gone.

Fast forward several years and it turns out The Split is still a ‘thing’. I wouldn’t have known had I not heard a snatch of a song during one of the interminable and annoying ad breaks on some streaming telly channel or other. It sounded lovely, and after some intensive investigation, proved to be one of the songs off this EP.

I’d never heard of Ms Broadfield but I’m working on the principle that I’ve heard her songs before. As will you. That’s what happens when you write songs that end up on telly shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Ghost Whisperer, The Vampire Diaries and hunnerds more besides.

I remain mystified at the lack of commercial success her albums haven’t enjoyed. There’s been four, dating back to 2007, and based on this EP, she’s a truly excellent singer and songwriter. But when you’ve got residuals coming in right, left and centre, and soundtracks that top the iTunes chart, who wants to drag themselves round clubs on tour, promoting a record.

As someone who abhors streaming music, a lot of her songs have passed me by, which is why I’m glad this one has received a physical release. All four of the songs are delightful with “Holding On Forever”, probably my favourite. One for those who like a lovely voice singing lovely songs. A delight.
