DORIE JACKSON – Stupid Says Run – review
Talking Elephant
Ms Jackson is probably best known as vocalist for progster Kaprekar’s Constant. She’s also worked as a backing vocalist with the likes of Chris Difford, Francis Dunnery, William Topley and Marti Pellow. But now, a mere 17 years after her first solo album, here’s another!
Now, straight off the bat, if you’ve come here looking for some prog rock, then you’ve come to the wrong place. That’s what she does over there, not over here. No, this is folk mixed up with seventies singer / songwritery stuff with just a hint, a mere soupcon of prog, in and around the arrangements. And it’s all rather good.
Naturally, Ms Jackson is a most excellent singer but there are some tremendous songs here, setting the voice in a delightful display. There are lots of thoughtful lyrics here as well, touching on grief, folklore, dementia and more. Ably supported by an array of Kaprekars (a Konvecation of Kaprekars?) You’ll find Mike Westergaard on keyboards and piano, Mark Walker on drums, Nick Jefferson on bass and Al Nicholson on guitar. There’s also some saxophone, flute, G# Bell and whistles from Dories Da. You know, David Jackson, formerly of Van der Graaf Generator.
There’s plenty of highlights to choose from here, but after the first few plays I’ve drawn in particular to ‘Wild Thyme’, ‘The Visitor’ and ‘The Hypnotist’s Watch’, the last of which will probably most suit fans of her day job. A tremendous release.
