NOIRSUAIRE – Black Flame Of Unholy Tradition EP – review
Noirsuaire

Hmm. I’m old enough to remember when black metal was a new thing. One of the reasons I’ve strayed down different paths was the astonishing similarity between releases and the ever more desperate attempts to rebrand the same old thing as some new thing.

But from time to time I dip back in, which is how I ended up with this CD EP from French black metallers Noirsuaire.

It’s very first wave of black metal (that’s FWOBHM to acronym fans) and that’s actually what appealed to me. It’s as if the last forty years had never happened. That’s especially true of the production which will come as a delight to those of you who miss the heady days of tape trading with that fella who used two portable cassette players as a four track mixing desk.

You’re getting plenty of aggression with many a high pitched King Diamond styled squeal and on ‘With Talons Sharp and Cruel’ there is more than a hint of talent. But anyone who has ears not permanently tuned to the mid-eighties will struggle a bit with the rest of it. Guitarist, bassist and vocalist N (yes, just N) freely admits this was recorded in the attic of his house in the Pyrenean mountains. It sounds like it.
