MAYSHE-MAYSHE – Indigo – review
Self Released
Dreampop, eh? Sounds like the sort of thing that I’ll heartily disapprove of. Don’t care for dreams as mine usually involve a combination of my dead wife, being crushed by a giant bookcase and a wave of angry vegetables coming down the Ramsay ladder demanding my submission.
Pop? Eh. Not so much these days. What little I hear seems to be autotuned squeaking or AI generated ringtones. So what chance Mayshe-Mayshe aka Yorkshires very own, Alice Rowan?
Well, actually, I rather enjoyed this. Yes, a lot of the electronica sounds do remind me of slapping phones out of the hands of subordinates back in the day. And, yes, her vocals are very much on the light side of things. But there’s some dark shit going on in here.
This is her second record and if you weren’t paying proper attention you’d miss phrase like “I’m drained at the notion and dripping with emotion”. Or the fact that one of the songs is in Dutch. A language that always entertains me whenever I’m there. Wat je ken? It’s exactly the same in Scottish. But with an added h and a y instead of a j. Etymology rocks, kids. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
For sure, there’s a lot of hippy on display and you know the rules. But the brooding, creeping underbelly of the music is extremely compelling. ‘Dark Mountain’ is probably the highlight, superficially a pop song but cloaking some synth work that makes your blood curdle.
