| 1) New album
Finally – the new album ‘alterum’ is here. It will be released worldwide on October 27th, and will be available on both CD and vinyl. The title comes from a Latin quote:
‘alterum orbem terrarum eam appellant’
‘they call it the other world’
Gaius Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Elder AD 23 – AD 79)
The album originally started life as an album exploring songs of the Gaelic ‘otherworld’ (mythology, mystery, supernatural) but which eventually evolved around the idea of ‘other worlds’. When I first started singing professionally, Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio) said that my songs were like ‘beautiful messages from another world’. It struck me as unusual that songs which have been sung in a language which has been spoken for over a thousand years in Scotland, can sound so exotic, even foreign, here at home. It got me thinking about the various worlds we inhabit, day to day, linguistically, culturally, socially, and how we move between them. This album celebrates the Gaelic tradition I am so proud to be a part of, but also reaches out to other languages and traditions. This album is a collection of songs, carefully chosen, and delivered in three languages – Gaelic, English and Galician.
Engineered by legendary musician Calum Malcolm and featuring special guests including Mary Chapin Carpenter, Donald Shaw, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and Gillebride MacMillan, this has been the most enjoyable album I have recorded to date.
Pre-ordering is available directly from me at the website shop – and all CD pre-orders from http://www.juliefowlis.com/shop/ will be shipped two weeks in advance of the worldwide release. Vinyl orders are due for shipment upon arrival at end October, and a limited number will be available signed. ALL orders made before Sept 30th will be signed by Julie.
