Bette Midler salutes the great girl groups on “It’s the Girls”

Bette Midler salutes the great girl groups of the last seven decades on her new album, It’s the Girls, out on November 4 in the U.S. and November 17 in the U.K.

Midler has covered some of this genre in the past from her Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to her medley of great 60’s girl groups on Uptown/Don’t Say Nothin’ (Bad About My Baby)/Da Doo Ron Ron, but this is the first time she has dedicated a whole album to the sound.

It’s the Girls goes as far back as the 40’s with the Andrews and Boswell Sisters and runs through the 50’s (Chordettes, DeCastro Sisters), a large group from the 60’s (Ronettes, Chiffons, Exciters, Crystals, Martha and the Vandellas, Marvelettes, Supremes, Shirelles) and into the 90’s with TLC.

Bette returns to multitracking on a number of songs, singing all the parts originally done by the Andrews Sisters and the other artists, and brings in Darlene Love to duet on He’s Sure the Boy I Love.
