Well now, this is interesting, if not exactly a surprise, bearing in mind that pre-Nightwish, Ms Turunen had studied classical singing in Finland and Germany, and has a good light soprano range.

So, she teamed up with her drummer, (and Axel Rudi Pells) Mike Terrana, and took to the road in Eastern Europe and South America performing classical music with accompanying orchestra on the immodestly titled “Beauty & The Beat” tour.  Thing is, will her fans warm to a whole lot of Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonín Dvořák?  Because classical music fans won’t give it a second glance.  After all, she’s no Aleksandra Kurzak. But as a piece of crossover, it does have it’s appeal.

Which, I suspect, is why this has come out as a double CD, with the second one having solo material, some Nightwish and covers of Queen and Led Zeppelin tunes.  And I suspect fans will be mainly playing that one to hear Ms Turunen do what she does best.  The concept was certainly an ambitious one, the music (recorded over 3 nights at the Kongresové Centrum, Zlín, Czech Republic) is beautifully presented and fans of Cozy Powell will certainly enjoy Mr Terrana thundering along to the Lone Ranger theme tune.

It’s out as a 2 CD album, DVD and Blu-Ray.
