Alistair Griffin has joined forces with Yorkshire-born singer and presenter Kimberley Walsh on his forthcoming single The Roadthe official anthem of Yorkshire’s Grand Départ 2014.

Welcome to Yorkshire, which led the winning bid to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire, commissioned Yorkshire singer/songwriter Alistair to write and perform the official song, which will now also features Kimberley Walsh.

The Bradford-born Girls Aloud star has a fan base globally of millions and followed up her success with the band with a lead role in Shrek the Musical, a series of Strictly Come Dancing and also a solo album.

A stirring anthem, the song called The Road will be an all Yorkshire affair with Alistair and Kimberley, to celebrate the arrival of the world’s largest annual sporting event coming to Yorkshire for the first time in history. It is due for official release on June 30 with pre-orders available now at http://www.letouryorkshire/theroad.

Alistair, from York, has a track record of writing for major sporting events. His anthemic track Just Drive is the title music for Sky Sports’ Formula 1 coverage, and millions heard his music when Andy Murray lifted the Wimbledon trophy last year as Alistair’s song “What If” sound tracked the BBC coverage.

Kimberley said: “The Grand Départ coming to Yorkshire for the first time ever is an historic moment and whether you love cycling or not, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To work with Alistair on the official anthem for the Grand Départ is exciting – it’s an emotional, rousing track that people can sing along to. Being a Yorkshire girl myself means it has a special resonance with me because it’s my home county and the race will go through my home city of Bradford. I’ve been involved with Sky Ride too, so it seemed only natural to get involved and help celebrate the county I love. Come July 5, the whole world will see and know Yorkshire, which is an amazing thing to be part of.”

Alistair said: “It’s a genuine honour to have written the track to celebrate this globally famous event and sporting coup for Yorkshire and the nation and to have Kimberley involved with her passion for music and Yorkshire is incredible. We all hope it will be the music that springs to mind when people think of the Grand Départ and hopefully two British winners for the first two stages! The video’s going to have a Wuthering Heights feel to it, and will showcase the dramatic countryside as well as telling the story of The Road – and there’ll be bikes too! When Welcome to Yorkshire first asked me, no was never an option –I was delighted to be asked.”

The CD single of The Road is available now to pre-order making it an essential piece of historic Yorkshire Grand Départ memorabilia at www.letouryorkshire.com/theroad.
The Road will be officially released on June 30 through Elbow Grease Records.
