Singles Bar – The Urchins vs. The OK Social Club vs. Scott Ellison vs. Stop Press!

A debut single from a Glasgow indie band, who like all indie bands, sound a bit like every indie band from the early eighties. In their favour is an adventurous approach to production and arrangement, which sees a thumping bass riff power the lead song onwards. Even the B-side, ‘Getting Old Too Soon’ sees them throwing a moothie into the mix. A band worth keeping an eye on.

Embras OK Social Club have been bashing away at their indie thing for quite some time now, and the odd good tune has sneaked out hither and thither. This isn’t one of them. For sure, they bash out some high speed jingle jangle, but it’s a bit like speed dating in that first impressions can be very deceiving, and this doesn’t stand up to repeat plays. B-side ‘Made In The Shade’ is the better song but, sadly, isn’t a cover of the Lynyrd Skynrd gem.

Woof! ‘Jesus Loves Me (Baby Why Don’t You)’. Oh, yes. Some scorching rhythm and blues (in old money) from Tulsa, Oklahoma. And if like me, you chortled your way through the Winona Ryder career nadir that was the Jason Statham fronted “Homefront”, then you may have heard this already. And it’s a peach, almost matched by the funky ‘Elevator Man’. Red hot, righteous and blue.

Back to indieville for some female fronted indie ska. And if that brought you out in a cold sweat, then you may want to move on now. On the plus side, the skeletal backing is quite endearing, in the way that your not quite the full shilling twenty something cousin would try to ride your bike when you were eight. On the downside, the vocals are dire. Which makes the instrumental B-side the one you want to listen to. Unless you’re a fan of the Official Worst Band In The World To Have A Hit Single, The Selecter. Then you’re quids in.
