BETH HART & JOE BONAMASSA
Live In Amsterdam
Provogue Records
Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa have made two studio albums now, so 2013 saw them touring the “Seesaw” record, a competent set of blues and soul covers, with this DVD being filmed in the summer of 2013 at Amsterdam’s Carre Theatre.
As with everything Bonamassa has done over the last few years, it’s been produced by Kevin Shirley and sees them backed by band that performed on featured on Bonamassa’s 2009 “Ballad Of John Henry” album. So that’s the Anton Fig on drums, Blondie Chaplin on guitar, Carmine Rojas on bass and Arlan Schierbaum on keyboards. And if you’re a fanof width over quality, then this bargain prices set sees you getting a 2 DVD set for under a tenner. The same price will also get you a CD or Blu-Ray should that float your boat.
The good news is that Ms Hart makes up for Mr Bonamassas deficiencies in that she is a proper frontwoman. She knows how to perform, and how to work a crowd. Which more than makes up for the sometimes aural assault of the band on some of the songs. And it’s when things are toned down that this really works. So the likes of ‘Your Heart Is As Black As Night’ and ‘Strange Fruit that come out best.
Fans of the albums will absolutely love this, and the visual chutzpah of Ms Hart might even win a few new converts to the cause.
