There must be at least two generations of people out there who just think of UB40 as a dodgy covers band and a set of tabloid headlines. But once upon a time, in the dim and distant past, they were an edgy, left-wing, political band. So here’s your chance to revist those days. As well as seeing where they turned into a dodgy covers band.

According to the band, these are “5 of our seminal albums together as part of a 5CD attractive box set: UB40 Classic Album Selection. This hand-picked album anthology features Signing Off, Present Arms, UB44, Labour of Love and Geffery Morgan.” Which translates as “our first five albums”.

“Signing Off” is the big one. Their debut, it saw their first two singles crack the top 10 – ‘King’ and ‘My Way Of Thinking’, and had the inkies salivationg, something that continued with “Present Arms”, which has their best single ‘One In Ten’. Things slipped on “UB44”, which may explain the arrival of “Labour Of Love”, and their transformation into a wedding band, along with platinum sales.

“Geffery Morgan” tried to hard to turn back the tide, but anyone with any sense will listen to the first three albums and shake their heads and sigh.
