FRANCES THORBURN & DAVID FARRELL
The Velveteen Carousel
Emerald River
Well you can’t really go wrong with an intimate album of standards. Well, you can, but if you’re a cracking singer who has found themselves a sympathetic accompaniast.
And that’s what we have wi’ Glesgas finest, Frances Thorburn & David Farrell. “The Velvet Carousel” sees them take on 10 gems from years gone by (and a Deacon Blue song), and come out the other side as out and out winners.
Ms Thorburn really does have a warm and inviting voice, which draws you into the storytelling of legendary artists such as Harry Warren, Sammy Cahn and the Gershwins. Even songs previously unloved by me like ‘Your House’ by Alanis Morissette are more than listenable here.
But it’s when they dig into ‘When I Fall In Love’, ‘The Man I Love’ and ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ that the magic spills out. A gem of an album, and if you happen to take a wrong turn over Christmas and end up in Glasgow, you’ll find Ms Thorburn in the Òran Mór Panto.
Their website is down as I write this, but keep trying
