Now I don’t know what your eighties were like, but mine involved staggering around in a ripped biker jacket, getting pissed, taking speed and going to Motorhead gigs. I also spent most of the decade not owning a radio or television, so imagine my surprise when I found out that not everyone was on the same path.

But here’s my chance to rectify that with two monster releases, the first of which contains 33 (count ’em) 12″ club classics. Or so it says here. Apparently all the cool kids were bagging off with the pretty girls (and boys) to eight minute long versions of The S.O.S Band playing ‘Just Be Good To Me’. The lucky bandits.

Even to a Neanderthal like me, there are some amazing sounds here, most of which are new to me, so goodness knows how moist the folks who were there first time around will be getting. It’s the second disc that works best for me with some stonking sounds from Alexander O’Neal, Nu Shooz and Thelma Houston the top of my pops.

Meanwhile, Zang Tuum Tumb were doing some extremely mental things in the eighties. Granted, they had bona fide genius Trevor Horn twiddling knobs and whatnots, but if you’re looking for deranged pop, then come on in to hear Tom Jones being resurrected for the first time.

Of course that was the tabloid headline, along with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Grace Jones, but the real meat in the sandwich are some amazing sounds from Horns own Buggles and The Art Of Noise. Now I’m told by people who know about these things that there is nothing rare on offer, but I couldn’t care less, now that I have The Buggles performing ‘I Am A Camera” (12″ Mix)’. Better than Yes!

Elsewhere, there is an array of mince music inbetween the genius, so the less said about the multitude of Frames tracks the better. Because, when it’s good, it’s genius.
