After its critically acclaimed run on Sky Arts last summer, Maison Close  the hit French show which adds an erotic twist to the traditional costume drama format – is finally back for a second series.

From Canal+, the makers of other prominent French programmes such as The Returned andSpiralMaison Close is a unique proposition. Starring Anglo-French actress Jemima West and set in a late-nineteenth century Parisian brothel, the racy and captivating drama is intensely watchable; combining a hard-hitting emotional story and graphic reality with stunning modern production techniques and a rock & roll soundtrack.

While Series 1 followed Veris, Hortense and Rose as they strived to escape the shackles of servitude; Series 2 sees the brothel, “El Paridis”, in rude commercial health, being managed and run by the girls themselves.

“From brutal to burlesque”
– Time Out London

Just as things are starting to look up for the residents of “El Paridis”, the Paris vice squad set about putting an end to the revived utopia and push for a return to public morality.  In order to hold them off, the girls turn to a young and flamboyant Parisian gangster looking to establish his quarters inside the brothel.

Hailed as the TV accompaniment to the “50 Shades…” book trilogy, Maison Close has earned a loyal fanbase, not just in the UK and Europe, but the world over. Such is the show’s appeal that network giant HBO have commissioned an American remake.

“Would make even a veteran of the
50 Shades trilogy blush”

– The Times

Beyond the fate of “El Paridis”, Maison Close takes an uncompromising look at the world of brothels and prostitution in the late nineteenth century, at the same time reigniting the debate surrounding the legalisation of brothels in France.

In French with English subtitles, Maison Close is currently showing on Sky Arts, Fridays at 10pm. Following the unbridled success of their French cop series Braquo and the recent porn-comedy Hard, Arrow films are once again looking across the channel in their bid to bring the world’s finest television shows to UK viewers.
