Jane’s Addiction, eh? A band tipped for greatness a hundred years or so ago, just before personality defects, egos and drugs got in the way. There’s many a modern day indie-rock band who can point to “Nothing’s Shocking” and “Ritual de lo Habitual”, and say that’s where we nicked our stuff from.
So, here they are with a live DVD. Now they had one of them out in 2010 called “Live Voodoo”. And with one exception, this is the same set. Which isn’t surprising because this show was actually filmed in 2011. So don’t come here if you’re looking for something new and exciting. But then you wouldn’t because nothing Jane’s Addiction have done in the studio during their various reformations and breakups has been worth listening to since 1990. However, if your head is still there, then you’ll like this well enough as Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and the Eric Avery replacement Chris Chaney, make all the right noises and Farrell throws all the right shapes.
Thankfully, Perry Farrell remembers that this is a live performance and works the stage like a trouper, something the rest of the band show no inclination to do. He was never the best singer, but at least he tries hard to entertain. The presentation of the show is a little lacklustre and half hearted but it has been filmed and recorded well. The best songs are the ones you will know – ‘Been Caught Stealing’, ‘Mountain Song’, and ‘Jane Says, but a lot of the others pass by in a blurry of mediocrity.
Fans will buy it, as there isn’t a huge catalogue of material out there, but casual passers by might wonder what the fuss was all about. There is a dearth of bonus material (a ten minute interview with Perry Farrell), which kind of defeats the purpose, and it’s also out as a DVD and a CD / DVD combo package.
