STATUS QUO
Bula Quo!
Fourth Chord
Well I thought Status Quo were finally losing the plot when they announced that they were to be starring in a film with Jon Lovitz (Saturday Night Live, The Wedding Singer), Craig Fairbrass (Eastenders) and Laura Aikman (Keith Lemon). I assumed it was some kind of tax write-off thing, and thought no more about it. But then I heard the soundtrack and, oh dear.
You could be generous and say fair play to the Quo for diversifying at such a late stage in their career into the world of Fijian music and reggae. Or you could slap them upside the head and say “all the goodwill engendered by the Frantic Four reunion has just been pissed up against the wall”.
It’s interesting to note the lack of Francis Rossi involvement in this soundtrack as he alway seemed to be the one least interested in the boogie, but with only 2 credits amongst the nine tracks, and a vocal from the bass player, the blame has to lie elsewhere.
The second, bonus, disc is more enjoyable as they revisit some old tunes, some live tunes, and a couple of numbers from “Quid Pro Quo”, their last album which I thought was going to herald a late golden age for the Quo. Shame then, that this came along to throw it all away. For fans only, and even they won’t play it more than once.
