Australian singer-songwriter Georgi Kay releases her debut four-track EP on July 29th via Regal, an imprint of Parlophone. Following April’s limited-edition Record Store Day 7″ single, the ‘In My Mind’ EP is a gorgeously dark body of work that announces the arrival of a fantastic new talent.
Georgi’s vocal on ‘In My Mind’ is already familiar to millions due to its chorus – which was written and performed by Georgi – forming the basis of the global dance smash of the same name, popularized by Swedish House Mafia through concerts around the world and its inclusion on their ‘Until Now’ album. Yet here, Georgi strips it back to its bare bones where it becomes an affecting and poignant song of rare beauty.
‘Ipswich’, inspired by the Salem witch trials and drawing on Georgi’s love of horror films and the supernatural, is a dark and brooding slice of magic, its stark and foreboding atmosphere offset by a thrilling stomp and swagger reminiscent of PJ Harvey or Florence + The Machine.
‘Jóga’ is a mesmerising cover of the Björk track, transposed to a spartan guitar figure, its notes hanging in the air alongside Georgi’s breathless and angelic voice.
‘Right Next To You’ rounds off the EP as an intriguing love song, driven by a stalking bassline that explodes into a kaleidoscopic wash of colours, beats and synths as the chorus takes over, hinting at the hypnotic likes of early Simple Minds or The Horrors, yet suffused with the catchy hooks of the greatest pop music.
‘Ipswich’, ‘Jóga’ and ‘Right Next To You’ all feature in the forthcoming BBC Two series ‘Top Of The Lake’, directed by Academy Award winner Jane Campion. Set in the remote mountains of New Zealand and starring Elisabeth Moss, Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan and David Wenham, this powerful story follows the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl named Tui who is five months pregnant and was last seen standing chest-deep in a frozen lake.
Jane Campion personally requested the use of Georgi’s music in the series and, upon meeting her, subsequently cast her in the role of ‘troubled’ young musician Melissa. Campion also specially commissioned the recording of ‘Jóga’ so it could be included in the series. ‘Top Of The Lake’ will be screened this summer on BBC Two and you can watch a trailer featuring Georgi’s track ‘Ipswich’ here.
Georgi Kay has recently moved to London where she is recording her debut album which promises to weave in influences as diverse as Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Björk and Grace Jones whilst further revealing the exciting talents of this young newcomer to the world stage.
The ‘In My Mind’ EP will be available digitally from June 16th and is released as a double-vinyl 7″ on July 29th.
