My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I hated the TV series with a vengeance, so it was only the appearance of one of the original books in a cheapo shop that persuaded me to part with a hard earned pound, but it was certainly worth it. The book is so much more than the television programme, with a depth to the characters that was completely lost on the small screen.
It really was one of those books you hate to put down, with the bus journey into work flashing by, as you became lost in the characters and the plot. I don’t think I lost anything by starting at Book 2 of the Aurelio Zen series as the story detailing the murder of an eccentric billionaire and the corruption of Italian politics is self-contained, but it certainly made me want to read more about the world weary Zen.
