Singles Bar – nulldB vs. The South vs. James J Turner
nulldB
Endzeit

Well, despite the doom mongering of German metalheads, nulldB, the end of the world did not arrive on schedule, although I suppose it may just have been delayed. Especailly, of it was taking the train. Regardless of their failed prophecy, I enjoyed this. But then I’m a sucker for formulaic heavy metal, with strident vocals and pounding riffs. And if you’re going to shout at me, do it in German. It just sounds right.
Over in the flip side, the last days may have passed, but the hunt begins on ‘Die Jagd beginnt’, which is a bit Iron Maiden, but good Maiden. You know, before they became a lumpen prog band. Nice.
The South
Second Coming

And by complete contrast here’s a new single from TheSouth, or The Beautiful Sout Without The Ugly Fella, to give them their full name. This follows up from the single ‘Stick It In And Turn It’ and the rather enjoyable album “Sweet Refrains”. It’s a sprightly pop tune that does what its supposed to, namely getting you interested in the album. If you’d forgotten that you liked them in the first place, give this a spin, and it will draw you back in sharpish.
James J Turner
Let Love Into Your Heart

Starting off your single with a bunch of “na na na na na na’s” is a sure fire to get yourself some attention round my way, so well done Scousie pop folkie, James J Turner, for doing just that. The former docker has been round the block a few times, touring and recording with The Electric Morning, before opening up his won studio and releasing his solo debut “The Believer”. I wasn’t bothered with that, but this new taster for his second album “How Could We Be Wrong?” sees him getting much more rootsy. He’s got a good voice, never forgets that a melody is a good idea, and never falls over into the bland folk crossover world that seems to pollute the genre these days. Good work.
