Kevin Ayers, a founder-member of The Soft Machine and a hugely important part of the English psychedelic scene, has died at the age of 68.

A renowned solo artist, he worked with the likes of Mike Oldfield, Syd Barrett, Brian Eno and John Cale.

Ayers died at his home in the village of Montolieu. He is survived by three daughters – Rachel Ayers, Galen Ayers and Annaliese Ellidge – and his sister Kate.
