Ah, 2006. I was in Pitlochry eating an Indian takeaway, watching the Eurovision song contest. And there they were. Lordi! Oh, it was good. And amzingly enough, it was an excellent song as well, a mix of Kiss, Alice Cooper and power metal. Shame, they couldn’t follow it up with some equally good, but regardless of the quality of Deadache” and “Babez For Breakfast”, the world needs more bands like Lordi.

Now we’ve got “To Beast or Not to Beast”, their sixth studio album, and one with yet another new lineup, most noticeably with the departure of keyboard player Awa. But regardless, and despite the fact that it was recorded in in Nashville, TN with well known producer Michael Wagener (Ozzy, Skid Row, Dokken), and the arrival of new members, keyboardist Hella and drummer Mana, it’s pretty much more of the same.

Which is a good thing. If you like the idea of Twisted Sister mixed with Rob Zombie, then songs like ‘We’re Not Bad For The Kids (We’re Worse)’ and album highlight ‘The Riff’ will suit you right down to the ground. They’re still massive Alice Cooper fans, most noticeabley on ‘Something Wicked….’, and even if some of the other songs aren’t up to those standards, it’s always an enjoyable listen.

In a world where so many bands are po-faced and stuck up their own arses, there will always be a place in my heart for bands like Lordi, who make metal fun again.
